FAQs

• What can I use the trials for?

Everything up to publication. Each trial is the complete font with the full character set, so you can explore, test, and present ideas — internally or to a client. Once the work goes live, whether a brand launches, a publication is printed, or a website ships, the end user needs a licence.

• Who buys the licence — me or my client?

Usually the client. The licence is held by whoever uses the fonts in production, which in most projects is the client rather than the agency or designer working for them. Designers only need a personal licence for their own independent work.

• How is the licence size determined?

By one number: the total employees of the organisation that holds the licence. Agency size, department structure, and how widely the fonts are used internally do not change the price.

• Do licences expire?

No. All licences are perpetual, there are no renewal fees, and they stay valid as the organisation grows.

• Can I use the fonts in a logo?

Yes. If the logo is going to be trademarked, that needs the Trademarked Logo extension. Converting the letters to outlines while you design is fine; modifying the font files themselves is not permitted without prior approval.

• Is there a student licence?

Yes, free of charge, for non-commercial work during your studies. Any professional use — freelance, internships, client projects — needs a commercial licence, even while you are enrolled.

• Where can I download the fonts?

Purchased fonts are in your account, and the download link is in the order confirmation as well. Trials arrive by e-mail once you request them through the Trials form.

• Which formats do you deliver?

Desktop licences come as OTF and TTF. Web and app licences add WOFF and WOFF2 to the same download, so one package covers every environment the licence allows.

• Do you offer variable fonts?

Where a family is drawn on an axis, it ships as a variable font alongside the static styles. If you need a variable version for a specific family or project, write to us.

• Which languages are supported?

The character set of each family is listed on its typeface page and in the PDF specimen. If a language or script you need is not covered, ask — extending a family is often possible.

• What can I do with my fonts?

Whatever the licence covers: install them on your devices for print and static digital work with a desktop licence, embed them on a website with a web licence, or bundle them into an app or game with an app licence. The Licensing page sets out each option in full.

• What does a custom typeface cost?

It depends on the number of styles, the character set, and the licence. We quote a fixed project fee after a first conversation about scope. A single display cut or wordmark sits at the low end; a multi-style family with extended language support at the high end.

• How long does it take?

Three to nine months for a full family, weeks for a wordmark or a single cut. Rush timelines are possible but change how the work is staged.

• Who owns the typeface?

Usually you do. We hand over exclusive rights and, where agreed, the source files. Some clients prefer a long-term exclusive licence instead — both are fine, and it is settled before we start.

• Do you work with agencies?

Yes. Much of our custom work runs alongside a branding agency or an in-house design team, either under their art direction or with us leading the type.

• Do you cover non-Latin scripts?

Yes, through collaborators who are native to those scripts. Cyrillic and Greek we draw in-house.

• Are you only working with clients in Berlin?

No — the studio is in Berlin, the clients are anywhere. Commissions have come from Germany, the rest of Europe, and the US, and the whole process works remotely.

• What are Softgoods?

Objects we make alongside the typefaces, produced in small runs and sold in the Softgoods shop. Each item is listed while it is in stock.

• Where do you ship?

Shipping and its cost are shown at checkout once you enter your address, before you pay. If your country is not offered, write to us and we will see what is possible.

• Can I return an item?

Yes. Your right of withdrawal, the time you have to exercise it, and how returns work are set out in the Softgoods Terms and Conditions.
